Come to National Bison Range in Montana if you want to see herds of wild buffalo roam the wild in their natural habitat. Masters of all they survey, watch them go about their business and take leisure lessons from them on how to unwind. A whole lot of wild life, from squirrels to black bears and birds share space with the bison in this wild life refuge.
The National Bison Range in the Flathead Valley in western Montana is an 18,500 acre wildlife refuge which looks as if Noah's ark docked here and a few animals decided to walk out and explore. See them stretch, yawn, and proceed to feed on the lush greenery or simply sun themselves royally. That must've been some flood.
About 370 wild bison roam the area along with about 100 antelope, 150 elk, and some 50 bighorn sheep, buffalo, and mountain goats. These follow unwritten territorial laws with others such as black bears, coyotes, deer, and about 200 species of birds. The deer are rather tame and may wander up to you. But you're strictly warned not to leave your vehicle for whatever reason.
The wildlife is not the only attraction that is going to catch your attention. The scenic views that are all around probably explain the placid demeanor of what is after all, wild life. Experience for yourself the beauty of the "land of the shining mountains," as you gaze mesmerized at the mountain peaks that seem to spread all the way to the horizon.
If you're traveling south on highway 93, turn right at the sign to Moiese. If you're headed north on 93, turn left at Ravalli into highway 200. When you hit Dixon, turn north on 212 and head for Moiese. Once here, head straight for the Visitor Center, where you will be informed about the dos and don'ts that are best followed to the letter. You can also find out all about the Red Sleep Mountain tour and the Buffalo Prairie driveāthe two tours that best reveal this wonderful wildlife refuge.
