The Bitterroot flower has a long history. It was first used by the Native Americans for trading and also as a food. Actually the name of the flower came from its bitter taste. However when cooked, the taste was no more bitter. But the flower is also hugely renowned for its beauty, and so it has become the state flower of the state of Montana.

To celebrate the beauty and the rich history of the flower, every year for 2 days, there is a festival held at Hamilton in Montana. Known as the Bitterroot Days, there are as many as 1,000 blossoms that are on display here. If you love flowers, this is where you should be.
