Flathead Lake
Flathead Lake sits between the most important Montana glacial parks and a skiing resort in the northern region. It is straddled by two main roads, which wind gracefully along its regal shorelines with scenic views that have made the state famous. In fact, it is one of the area's best kept fishing and boating secrets.
Renowned for its incredible scenery, prime fishing spots, and extensive boating opportunities, Flathead Lake, Montana, is truly a place of magnificence. It is one of the easiest lakes to reach, with two highways lining its perimeter.
Two rivers feed the lake, making it great for fishing for perch, trout, flatfish and whitefish, but not warm enough for swimming. There is plenty of room for everyone, with one hundred and sixty miles of shoreline, covering almost 200 miles2 of the state's territory. However, with depths of about three hundred feet, it is not a lake that should be treated with contempt – safety is imperative. It is also important to check in with the local forest ranger or visitor center to get the appropriate licenses, as well as any specific rules that apply during certain months.
The best time of year to visit the lake is during the warmer months, when the waters are warmer, calmer and the spring run-offs have long since gone. It provides a peaceful respite as well as a snow-capped mountain backdrop that is worth a photograph or two.
Though boating and fishing are its main activities, the lake is perfect for most water sports. With numerous bars and restaurants dotted around it, piers allow quick access for boaters to stop for a warm drink or even a hearty meal.
